Who wrote Psalm 72?

There is some uncertainty as to when Psalm 72 was written. The subscription says it was written of Solomon, but the post script says, “This concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse.” The psalm carries the theme of justice and righteousness which God would have desired for a new king. This psalm is also similar to Solomon’s prayer for wisdom. Was this psalm David’s prayer for Solomon before David’s death or was it a psalm Solomon might have had composed for himself? We don’t know for sure, but here are some thoughts for consideration. David may have written this psalm after he installed his son as king for these reasons:

1. The postscript seems to support David being the author.

2. The caption “Of Solomon” in the subscription could mean David wrote this Psalm about Solomon.

3. Psalm 72:1 says, “Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness.” Verses 2-17 also speak of the son in the third person as “he”. While Solomon could speak of himself in the third person as the king and royal son, it seems more natural for David to do it.

4. Verses 10 and 15 seem to indicate prior relationships known and established before Solomon ruled. Therefore, this Psalm could be viewed as a prayer of blessing upon Solomon before David died. This is a good example for us. Do we think to bless our children?
