Dreams and Prophecies

Here are three essential things the LORD says we should know about dreams and prophecies:

  • God warns the Israelites not to listen to false prophecies that draw them away from him (Deuteronomy 13:1-5). The self-proclaimed “prophets” were to die for doing that (Deuteronomy 18:20-22). “How do we know who is a prophet and who is not?” the Israelites asked. They (and we) know by whether the prophecies come true or not. No excuses were allowed for being wrong or partially right. No excuses were allowed for predictions, not in accord with God’s Word.
  • We should not place too much value on dreams. Solomon again said, “For in many dreams and in many words there is emptiness [worthless value]. Rather, fear God” (Ecclesiastes 5:7, NIV).
  • The writer of the book of Hebrews says,

In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe (Hebrews 1:1-2).

Prophetical dreams, therefore, are no longer necessary because God has spoken to us through His Son and through His Word, the Bible.
